According to research by the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, LEDs made from nanowires provide a brighter light source with less energy.

Researchers have delved into nanowires using X-ray microscopy, and researchers have been able to determine how to design nanowires to provide optimal performance. The findings were published in the ACS Nano scientific journal.

The nanowires are about 2 microns high (μm; 1 μm is 1/1000 mm) and have a diameter of about 10-500 nm (nm, 1 nm about 1/1000 μm). The nanowires for LEDs are composed of an internal gallium nitride (GaN) core and an outer layer of indium gallium nitride (InGaN), both of which are semiconductor materials.

The source of such a diode relies on the presence of mechanical strain between the two materials, which is greatly dependent on how the two layers of material contact each other. However, the special design of nanoscale X-rays allows nanowires to be destroyed during the process, allowing researchers to simultaneously measure a range of nanowires simultaneously.

The X-ray image of each nanowire shows the distribution of the scattering intensity, as well as the mechanical strain at the outer layer of the gallium nitride core and the gallium indium nitride. According to this strain, the outer layer fits perfectly with the core.


“We measured 20 nanowires, and we were very surprised when we saw the image, because you can clearly see the details of each nanowire, including the core and outer layers.
