LEDs are becoming more popular due to their high efficiency and long life . At present, LED is driving innovation in current lamp types and has made significant contributions to energy saving and emission reduction of internal or external lighting. This also occurs in street lighting applications because higher efficiency and longevity are critical to reducing overall costs (including repairs) and energy consumption. For these reasons, street lighting power supplies designed to power LED lights must be designed to be highly efficient and at least comparable to the life of the LEDs to ensure maintenance-free operation of the application over the life of the LED.

Introduced here is a 130W reference design board features and functions for LED power supplies designed for street lighting.

The circuit consists of two stages: a front-end PFC with ST L6562AT and an LLC resonant converter based on ST's L6599AT. The main features of this design are high efficiency (over 90%), wide input power range (85-305 V AC ) operation and long-term reliability.

Since the reliability of the power supply (average MTBF time between failures) is usually affected by electrolytic capacitors and their high failure rate, this reference board shows an innovative design approach unless very expensive types are used. This board uses EPCOS film capacitors instead of electrolytic capacitors. Component derating was carefully applied during the design phase, thus reducing component stress as recommended by MIL-HDBK-217D. With ST's new L6562AT and L6599AT devices, the number of components used in this solution is also minimized, increasing MTBF and optimizing total component cost. Due to the high efficiency, the PFC stage requires only a small heat sink, while other power components can be surface mounted like most passive components, reducing production labor costs.

The board also prevents overload or short circuit due to specific applications , open looping of each stage or input overvoltage , and the system automatically restarts after intervention.
