Tencent Digital (Shawn) OminiVision, which has been acquired by the Chinese consortium, has released four new smart phone sensor elements, promising to bring greater dynamic range and better noise control. According to reports, these 4 photosensitive elements use OminiVision's second-generation PureCel Plus and PureCel Plus-S pixel technology to enhance camera performance. In order to increase the dynamic range, OminiVision has increased the full well capacity of the new sensor, which means that each pixel has the ability to collect more light. Compared to previous models, the dynamic range of the new sensor is said to have increased by 20%. In addition to the overall dynamic range improvement, OminiVision also utilizes a new dynamic range technology called zHDR. By dividing the pixels in a zigzag pattern on the photosensitive element, zHDR can simultaneously capture images captured with two different exposure values (slight overexposure and slight underexposure). Subsequently, the data on the two images will be intelligently merged to achieve a further increase in the dynamic range. The pixels on the new sensor are arranged in a new structure, which can improve light acquisition while reducing noise. This capability benefits from the combination of the new composite metal matrix (CMG) and deep trench isolation (DTI), which reduces light pollution between pixels. OminiVision said that both technologies can increase light sensitivity by 12.5%. When the lighting conditions in the shooting environment are not ideal, it will play its part. OminiVision's new sensor provides two different resolutions of 16 million pixels and 20 million pixels. It can also use a different filter array to further enhance low light shooting capabilities, but this requires a certain sacrifice of resolution. Compared with previous generations of light sensors, they also incorporate phase detection autofocus and support 4K video capture. It is reported that the new photosensitive element of OminiVision will be applied to the production of smart phones in the first quarter of 2017. Source: DigitalTrends
