Oculus: Not not to be an open platform but just not coming from Baidu VR

Recently, the DICE Summit (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain Summit) kicked off in Las Vegas. The Summit is a gaming industry event that brings together a series of thinkers, creatives and leaders in the digital entertainment industry. Of course, there is no shortage of VR/AR industry celebrities, including Jason Rubin, head of Oculus's content department.

At this meeting, Rubin was asked a question: how to look at the concept of a development platform in the virtual reality industry. As we all know, Oculus was controversial in the issue of emphasizing the exclusivity of the game. Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price asked Rubin: “How can I make Oculus games land on other platforms to make them more open?” Rubin did not answer the question positively, but pointed out that hackers and other game players are using other platforms such as HTC Vive plays Rift games.

"I just played Dead and Buried with Vive users last week. I can tell that they are Vive users," Rubin said. Rubin knew that they were Vive users because their voices in the game were changed by the hackers they used. Rubin did not condemn these acts, but said, "We have not taken any measures to stop this behavior. In fact, the team members at Menlo Park are now working hard to solve the microphone problem."

In contrast to previous versions of Oculus's patch that prevented users from using Revive-like software, Rubin's answer made us look at Oculus in a very different way. Patches for cracked software solutions such as Revive were eliminated in subsequent updates. Rubin now admits that when encountering this type of hacker software, Oculus's attitude clearly shifted from passive acceptance to active solution.

Rubin said that Oculus fully agrees with the concept of an open platform and emphasizes that “we treat this issue more firmly than most people think.”

Rubin pointed out that Oculus supports Khronos project (extended reading: elimination of fragmentation in the industry: Khronos unified VR development standards positive response) is its commitment to VR as a symbol of an open platform. The plan is to define a cross-vendor, royalty-free open access standard for VR devices. “Oculus is very supportive of the Khronos project. If we have a VR development platform, we will strongly support it. A development platform has never been created by a single company. The correct approach is to establish an open standard. We believe this open Standards, and in any case we will all become part of this open ecosystem. Not that we don't support openness, but we think it's not the right time now."

What Rubin calls "a company" is probably alluding to Valve's Steam content distribution platform, which is what many people call a more open platform than Oculus' own home platform, because it also provides VR applications for both Rift and Vive users.

Rubin also proposed a challenging point of view that there is no real open VR platform yet, and steam is not. He also reiterated Oculus's commitment to the Khronos plan and stated that the company "is committed to joining the plan."

to sum up

The VR market is in a fierce competition. We need to face up to the exclusive value that the market brings to the quality of content in the early stage of the market, because only good games will get the platform's financial support and obtain exclusive qualifications, only the most direct ones. Benefits can drive development teams forward and move forward faster and further, but also pay attention to the negative impact of monopoly strategies on developers and players. The open platform is the core of the VR industry. However, with the current situation of VR development, the entire VR industry has not yet established a unified standard. The implementation of the Khronos plan and the addition of major platforms will help promote the development of the entire VR ecosystem. As Rubin said, the real open platform is not something a company can build. Only when you open up and open to everyone and open up, is it really open, and hopefully this day will come soon.
