Molex and Microchip Technology Inc. are currently collaborating to develop integrated USB media modules and USB power output solutions for automotive infotainment systems. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, January 9-12, 2018, Molex highlighted this advanced application for connected vehicles. Dave Atkinson, director of business development for Molex's mobile solutions, said: "Many vehicles today are equipped with multiple chargers and power ports to keep pace with the extraordinary demands of mobile connectivity. Our integrated automotive solutions are for our customers. Provides design flexibility to simplify and customize infotainment systems and USB power output systems for a variety of vehicle configurations." Molex's booth at CES 2018 showcases USB media modules and power output solutions. In a state-of-the-art demonstration, the USB Media Module and Power Output solution complemented Microchip's equipment to enable a power-balanced USB power output solution while also supporting driver assistance applications on mobile devices. Microchip's USB devices are optimized for USB power output and can be easily designed into a single module by building the architecture of the overall system solution, reducing the total cost of the BOM. Automotive smart hub chips play a key role in connecting multiple handheld devices to the car's infotainment system while charging them. The solution supports driver assistance utilities on mobile devices, allowing the vehicle's audio host and display to interact with applications such as maps, music, voice recognition text, and hands-free mobile calls. The demonstration demonstrates the implementation of USB power output, enabling dynamic power sharing while maximizing the ability to charge consumer products. The USB4916 automotive smart hub chip contains an integrated microcontroller that performs power output stacking and power balancing between two USB 2.0 type-c ports. Mitch Obolsky, vice president of USB and Networks Group at Microchip, said: "As USB can deliver more power and provide driver assistance applications for the host's display, the number of USB ports in the vehicle has been growing rapidly. By working with Molex By coordinating our work, we can implement optimal solutions from chip to module that are tailored to the exacting requirements of the automotive industry OEMs, allowing our customers to get the solutions they need from the market."
