The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently released the March 2009 version of the Multi-Year Program Plan FY2009-FY2015 for Solid State Lighting R&D for the 2009-2015 fiscal year.
The program describes the activities the US Department of Energy plans to conduct between fiscal year 2009 and fiscal 2015 to implement its SSL mission.
The program reviewed major developments in 2008, announced a new lighting competition, and outlined several large government industry conferences hosted by DOE.
In addition, the program provides information on current portfolios and funding opportunities, and updates the Congress's grants for SSL as of March 2009. Funding for fiscal 2009 is expected to be approximately $25 million (as shown below).
Major upgrades to technical research and development programs include:
Revised component definitions for solid state lighting fixtures to comply with IES standards
Emphasis on problems encountered in the development of LED and OLED products
Revised the mission structure of LEDs and OLEDs, as well as the latest priorities for product development and core tasks
Updated list of technology, cost and market barriers
The US Department of Energy will continue to regularly update its multi-year plans to incorporate new analysis, new improvements, and the latest priority research projects for scientific development.
