Dialog Semiconductor introduces a new solid-state lighting (SSL) LED driver that combines boost and flyback converters into a single IC to reduce bill of materials compared to traditional two-stage drivers (BOM) Cost and simplify design while delivering outstanding performance.
The new iW3623 was developed by Dialog's Power Conversion Business Group (formerly iWatt Inc., acquired by Dialog in July 2013), and has diversified its portfolio of products into the digital power management market.
The iW3623 offers a universal 100VAC to 277VAC full voltage input range and up to 45W output power. The unit integrates a power factor correction (PFC) boost controller and a flyback converter for LED current regulation with high PF greater than 0.95 and low total harmonic distortion (THD) less than 10%. Dialog's patented Flickerless design achieves near-zero 100-120Hz output ripple, while built-in over-temperature protection (OTP) and derating capabilities allow lighting designers to achieve predictable and reliable lamp life.
The combination of a rich, integrated feature makes the iW3623 an ideal solution for a variety of non-dimming commercial solid state lighting downlights, PAR, T8 and flat chandelier applications.
The iW3623 uses Dialog's patented PrimAccurate master-side control technology to eliminate the need for secondary regulators and optocouplers, thereby further saving BOM cost. This device also allows the replacement of field effect transistors (FETs) with lower cost bipolar junction transistors (BJTs). While using BJT switches can reduce overall solution costs, achieving high conversion efficiencies can be quite challenging.
The way the iW3623 solves this problem is to use dynamic base current and resonant mode switches for the boost and flyback stages to achieve maximum conversion efficiency while minimizing EMI. In addition, Dialog's EZ-EMI technology simplifies EMI filtering and further minimizes external part counts.
Most power ICs have a thermal shutdown function that shuts down the IC at high temperatures. Although this protects the IC, it does not protect the LED driver circuit. The iW3623 includes powerful built-in thermal protection and power derating to virtually monitor the internal temperature of a sealed solid state lighting bulb. The Over Temperature Protection (OTP) function is set via the NTC resistor. When the temperature of the lamp reaches the set temperature, the iW3623 will automatically reduce the current of the LED. This reduces power consumption, which in turn cools the operating environment and ensures that the temperature of the electrolytic capacitors in the system does not rise above the rated value.
The power derating function allows the capacitor to operate for the maximum lifetime of the solid state lighting bulb and predicts the life of the bulb. The reduced brightness of the current decrement is minimal, so the user does not notice any change in the light output. In extreme temperatures, the iW3623 cuts off the LED current to avoid the risk of safety and fire.
In addition, the iW3623's safety features include LED open/short circuit, single fault, overcurrent, current sense resistor short circuit, input overvoltage, under voltage, and AC line overvoltage/frequency protection. During the output overvoltage condition, the iW3623 enters the extended discharge mode while maintaining fast recovery, which enables hot-swappable LED modules without the risk of dangerously high output voltages.
