Scientists confirm solar cell avalanche effect Image source: TU Delft

A recent study by Dutch scientists has found solid evidence for the electronic avalanche effect in nanosemiconductor crystals. The results are expected to pave the way for the development of cost-effective solar cells. Related papers are published in the Nano Letters.

Solar cells carry the hope of large-scale power production in the future. However, current solar cells are subject to various limitations, such as relatively low power generation efficiency (typically around 15%) and high manufacturing costs. One possible improvement is the use of semiconducting nanocrystals to fabricate new solar cells. In traditional solar cells, a photon can only release exactly one electron. These free electrons ensure the normal power generation of the battery. The more electrons are released, the more efficient the solar cell is.

However, in some semiconductor nanocrystal materials, one photon can release two to three electrons, which is called the avalanche effect. In this case, the theoretical maximum efficiency of solar cells can reach 44%. In addition, their cost will be cheaper.

In fact, in 2004, researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States measured the avalanche effect for the first time. But since then, the scientific community has questioned the existence of the avalanche effect and the value of these measurements.

Leading the latest research is Professor Laurens Siebbeles of the Technische Universiteit Delft and the Fundamental Basic Research Foundation (FROM). He and colleagues confirmed that avalanche effects do occur in lead selenide (PbSe) nanocrystals. However, this effect is not as big as previously thought. Because the researchers used the ultrafast laser method to make more careful measurements, the new findings may be more credible.

Siebbeles believes that this research will pave the way for further revealing the mystery of the avalanche effect.
